The company of the future seeks to be inclusive and open to the outside world.\u00a0To be inclusive, a responsible company must first identify all stakeholders it affects. Once identified, the company needs to integrate these stakeholders and work together with them. So, how do you get started? We\u2019ll explain the role of stakeholders in CSR Strategy in this article!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Who are the stakeholders?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Identifying stakeholders<\/strong> can take some time as there are so many of them! In the past, we tended to talk first and foremost about &#8216;shareholders\u2019. But for some years now, responsible companies have been taking a different stance and use the term \u2018stakeholders\u2019 which refers to all those involved in and around a company.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stakeholders are all the physical or legal entities that interact with a company and its business. This ranges from internal employees to customers, business partners, public authorities and suppliers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Different stakeholders have <strong>different relationships<\/strong> with the company:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Active economic stakeholders (suppliers, business partners, customers, employees)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Observers and\/or influencers (non-profit organisations, trade unions, lobbies, government)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beneficiaries or victims, depending on the positive\/negative and direct\/indirect effects of the company\u2019s activities (local communities, etc.)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Who are the internal stakeholders?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All those who interact directly with the company:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shareholders;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">executives\/managers;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">employees;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trade unions.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Who are the external stakeholders?\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NGOS;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">governments;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">customers;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">local communities;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">business partners;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suppliers.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Why are stakeholders important?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Corporate social responsibility<\/strong> grants stakeholders a far more important role than before. They have become an <strong>essential component<\/strong> of the strategy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A responsible company\u2019s \u2018<strong>impact culture<\/strong>\u2019 is built on the balance between its economic, environmental and social concerns. <strong>CSR teams<\/strong> are tasked with protecting this balance and setting <strong>impact improvement<\/strong> targets. Another of their tasks is to ensure transparency and an <strong>inclusive approach<\/strong> to stakeholders. A company\u2019s <strong>prosperity<\/strong> depends partly on creating shared <strong>added value<\/strong> since without its stakeholders, a company cannot continue to develop and evolve.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This added value opens the way for <strong>collaborative innovation<\/strong> and the possibility of creating tailored products and services. It also helps to provide a holistic view of your CSR strategy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>First step of the CSR strategy: identifying stakeholders<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the first steps in launching a<strong> CSR initiative<\/strong> is to identify all the company&#8217;s stakeholders. Once done, it is particularly important to identify these <strong>stakeholders\u2019 expectations<\/strong> of how your company manages its impact.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When launching a CSR policy, project leaders already have a vision of the <strong>sustainable commitments<\/strong> and objectives they wish to achieve. However, their vision is internal and personal. Other stakeholders may potentially have a different view of what the company\u2019s priority should be. It is therefore important to do extensive research and include the results in your CSR strategy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Co-building a CSR strategy with the help of stakeholders<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The stakeholder map<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As already mentioned, the first phase of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abeautifulgreen.com\/en\/services\/sustainability-strategic-plan\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>CSR strategy<\/strong><\/a> is to identify the company&#8217;s internal and external stakeholders. Take a moment to brainstorm and list the different stakeholders who interact with your company. You can go a step further and rank your<strong> stakeholders<\/strong> in order to understand the influence each has on your business.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>The materiality matrix<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once stakeholders have been identified, it is useful to understand their <strong>expectations<\/strong> of how the company manages its impact. The aim of this process is to rank the company&#8217;s social, environmental and economic <strong>commitments<\/strong>. By comparing the expectations of your stakeholders with those of the company, you can establish the <strong>guidelines<\/strong> for your CSR strategy. The <strong>collaborative process<\/strong> is ongoing and the company must be <strong>transparent<\/strong> about its strategy and the actions it decides to take.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It must learn to communicate honestly and be open to feedback and dialogue.
